Introductory Glacier Walk and Ice Climb

Svínafellsjökull in February.
In this tour we drive to the tip of an out sled
glacier, put on crampons, and with ice axe in hand we make about a 2 km guided excursion
onto the glacier.
Optionally we can try a short ice climbing route, using ropes and
climbing equipment to ensure complete safety. No exceptional
fitness or climbing experience is needed, only a
sense of adventure!
Please note. Now in late March 2008 we have fully booked
the spring/summer in mountaineering trips. Check out
www.mountainguide.is
for glacier hikes etc. here in southeast Iceland this summer. We are always able
to take more people to Ingólfshöfði and we will also be able to do some Kayak
trips this summer. We can book mountaineering trips again after 10/10.

Ice climbing practice with "Top rope" for safety. This
picture is taken in April.

In Svínafellsjökull in June.
|
 | Time of year
recommended possible all around the year
but in June-August we have so many Coast
Tours to do that we can not do many Ice Tours |
 | Equipment provided crampons, ice axe, climbing harness
and a helmet |
 | Group size
1 to
8 people* |
 | Duration 2
- 3 hours |
 | Price
12.500 ISK for one client, 7.500 for 2 clients, 6000 for 3 and 5000 ISK for
4-8 clients* |
* We can do more basic version of this trip with up to 16
people at a time but then we skip the ice climb. The price is 4500 ISK (minimum
3 paricipants).
In both versions of the Ice Tour you will walk on crampons so it
is important that you are wearing hiking boots. If you don't have hiking boots
let us know, we can bring mountaineering boots in all sizes.
Svínafellsjökull glacier is just about 900 meters away, behind this hotel. Note
that Hotel Skaftafell is 5 km east
from the National Park Skaftafell. We start the trip from this parking. (Sometimes people
make the mistake to go to the
National Park to meet us).
The glacier
surface can change a lot depending on which season of the year it is. Normally
they are white, clean and easy to walk on in the spring, in the summer they
become more and more dirty, but are normally still quite easy to walk on. Then
by the middle of the winter (November-March) they are blue and very slippery. At
that time we can only take 2 clients at a time since
short roping is neccessary.
But don't hesitate to contact us even if you are more than 2
people. We can sometimes skip the hiking circle on the glacier, concentrate on
ice climbing, or even explore an ice cave instead.
